Women as Myth Makers

Birth of the Modern Woman

Today, as women, we are entering an era of rebirth, a time for self-expression and individuality. This is a time to be proud of who we are and be thankful for all that we have. The next generation of women have the opportunity to break out of the womb and be who they want to be; without the pressures that media or men put upon them. Social pressures to be pretty but not prissy or sexy but not slutty will be obsolete. Everyone will be able to be who they are and not be ashamed that they are showing too much skin and might “give off the wrong impression.” It will be a time where we will be supporting ourselves and looking to other women for guidance instead of being in the shadow of a powerful man. It is about time that women take back control of their bodies and show that we are much more than objects for the male gaze to hold.

  1. I love how you made Maplethorpe's idea into your own by using the female body and showing it as a body and not as an object. The angles you went at are beautiful, as they create these great negative spaces and diagonal lines throughout the images. The squares were a good touch too - they feel very much like a polaroid like that. I want more of these! Especially with the cloths. I love what the colors represent and I would love to see more like those.
