Annie Leibovitz

The photographer I decided to research Annie Leibovitz. She is well known for her portraits, she is actually the only portrait photographer that I remembered from taking this class in High School. She uses bright colors and interesting poses to captivate her viewers. I especially like this photographer because she was born in Waterbury, Connecticut which is about an hour from where I grew up. She originally worked at Rolling Stones and then left them to work for Vanity Fair. She was able to photograph whoever she wanted at her jobs, giving her access to presidents even some nice teen heart throbs. She is able to live her dreams and take pictures of what she wanted with little to no boundaries on what the subject matter was. A lot of her work was taking pictures of celebrities, a lot of them even being somewhat controversial, including the portraits she took of Demi Moore, where she was pregnant and Nude, as well as Whoopi Goldberg who was half-submerged in a bathtub of milk. (as seen below)

My favorite photos of hers aren't the ones of the celebrities that we all know with the crazy background and editing. I really enjoyed her set of photographs where she focused on taking pictures of dancers. These photographs to me were the most moving because I saw them as people who are unknown, you don't know. It allows the photography to show you who they are, who they want to be, and who they are trying to be. There is just so much more to the picture when it is a person not almost everyone knows about. All together I think that Annie Leibovitz is a great photographer who I want to be more like. I have always been interested in portraits and that is exactly what she does but in a more interesting and fun way.
